Ways to use this list
- Map work for Key Stage 2: spin a city, find it on a UK map and say which nation it is in and which coast or river it is near.
- Rail journey planning: spin two cities and work out a route between them with no more than one change of train.
- Postcard writing: describe one real sight in the city you spin, such as a cathedral, castle, bridge or market.
- Quick-fire round: spin a city and name something it is known for before everyone counts to five.
- Category game: spin a city, then everyone writes a food, an animal and a name that start with its first letter.
Press Spin the wheel, tap the game or press the Space bar. Change the list in the box as you
like: add your own, delete what doesn't suit you, or write *2 after an entry to give it double the
chance. The game buttons switch the same list to a duck race, hat, claw machine and more.

Questions people ask
Is every place on this list really a city?
Yes. Each one has official city status, which in the UK is granted by the monarch rather than earned by size. That is why tiny St Davids in Wales is a city while large towns such as Reading are not.
Is London officially a city?
Strictly speaking, two parts of it are: the City of London and the City of Westminster. Greater London as a whole has never been granted city status, but everyone calls it a city, so it appears on the wheel simply as London.
Which UK cities are the newest?
Milton Keynes, Colchester, Doncaster, Wrexham, Dunfermline and Bangor in Northern Ireland all became cities in 2022, the year of the Platinum Jubilee. Southend-on-Sea was made a city earlier that same year.
Why are there two Bangors?
Both are cities. Bangor in Gwynedd, north Wales, is an old cathedral city, and Bangor in County Down, Northern Ireland, gained city status in 2022. Each is listed with its nation so you can tell them apart.
