How to make random teams
- Add the names, one per line, or paste a column from a spreadsheet. The list is shared with the name picker, so names you already typed there are ready here.
- Choose the split: a number of teams, or a number of people per team.
- Add extras if you like: team names, a leader for each team, or rules such as "keep Sam and Alex apart".
- Press Make teams. Not happy? Shuffle again gives a completely new split.
Fair teams, even sizes
A good team randomizer does two things: it shuffles properly, and it keeps the teams the same size. This one uses your browser's secure random generator for the shuffle, then spreads any extra people across teams one at a time, so teams never differ by more than one person.
Rules for real groups
Real classes and clubs come with real constraints: two best friends who chat all lesson, a pair who must work together because they share a language, siblings who should be on different sides. Write them as simple rules:
Sam + Alexunder Keep apart puts them in different teams;Kim + Leeunder Keep together puts them in the same team;- chain rules (
A + BandB + C) to keep three people together.
The random group generator still shuffles everyone else freely, so the teams stay random while the rules hold.
Ideas for using it
- Classrooms: project groups, reading circles, lab partners and debate sides in seconds.
- Sports and PE: pick fair sides for football, basketball or relay races, with captains.
- Work: breakout rooms, workshop tables or a mixed lunch rota across departments.
- Game nights: quiz teams, drawing-game pairs or a fair split for a tournament.
Need partners rather than teams? Try the random pair generator. Need one person, not a group? Use the name picker games.

Questions people ask
How does the random team generator make teams fair?
Names are shuffled with your browser's secure random number generator, and team sizes are as even as possible: with 23 people in 4 teams you get teams of 6, 6, 6 and 5. Nobody is ever left out or put in two teams.
Can I choose the number of people per team instead of the number of teams?
Yes. Under Split into, choose teams of a set size and enter how many people you want per team. The generator works out how many teams that makes and keeps the sizes even.
Can I keep two people together or apart?
Yes. Open Rules and write one pair per line, like Sam + Alex, under Keep together or Keep apart. The generator tries many random layouts until every rule fits, and tells you if a rule can't be kept with the team sizes you chose.
Can each team get a leader?
Tick Pick a leader for each team and one random person in every team is marked with a star as its leader or captain.
Can I name the teams?
Choose numbers (Team 1, Team 2β¦), colours, animals or space names. Changing the names doesn't reshuffle the teams.
Is this a random group generator too?
Yes. Groups and teams work the same way: use it for project groups, breakout rooms, lab partners in threes, tables at an event or squads for a game.
Can I save or share the teams?
Copy them as text, download them as a CSV file for Excel or Google Sheets, or press Share for a link that opens the generator with your list and settings.
