Privacy policy

Last updated: 4 November 2026

The short version: the names you type never leave your device. There are no accounts and no analytics of our own. Ads are shown by an advertising partner, Adsterra, and you can switch them off at any time.

This policy is from the people who run Fun Random Name Picker, called "we" below. You can reach us at [email protected].

The names and lists you enter

  • Everything you type into the picker is processed in your own browser. It is not sent to our server.
  • If you create a share link, the list is placed in the link itself, after the #. Browsers do not send that part of a link to any server, but anyone who has the link can see the list. Photos are never put in share links.

What is stored on your device

To make the picker convenient, your browser keeps the following on your device (in its local storage, and photos in its IndexedDB storage). We cannot see any of it.

  • Your last list, and your edits on each ready-made list page (kept for that page only).
  • Lists you save.
  • Settings such as speed, sound and the number of winners, and the options you chose in the team generator, pair generator and list randomizer (with the pair generator's second list).
  • The no-repeats round: who has already had a turn and who won last, so "No repeats until everyone is picked" carries on when you come back.
  • "Absent today" marks on the classroom name picker.
  • Photos you add to names. They are shrunk to small squares and kept only in this browser. They are never uploaded and never put in share links.
  • Theme (light or dark), your cookie choice, and whether you have seen the first tip.
  • An offline copy of the site's pages, kept by the browser (a service worker cache) so the picker also works without a connection. It holds only our own pages and files, never your names.

You can delete all of this at any time by clearing this website's data in your browser settings.

Server logs

Like almost every website, our hosting provider's web server automatically records basic technical details when a page is requested: the IP address, the page and the time, and the browser type. These logs are used only to keep the site secure and working. They are kept only as long as the host keeps them, which is a short time, and they never contain the names you type.

Advertising

The site is free because it shows ads, provided by Adsterra. As on any site with ads, the ad partner's scripts run on the page; we never send them your names or lists. When ads load, Adsterra and its partners may use cookies and similar technology and receive information such as your IP address, device type and the page you are on, to show and measure ads. Their use of that information is covered by Adsterra's privacy policy.

  • If your device is set to a European time zone (UK, EU, EEA, Switzerland), or its time zone is hidden, we ask first: ads load only if you choose Accept.
  • Everywhere else ads load automatically. You can switch them off at any time: choose Cookie settings at the bottom of any page and then Reject. The page reloads, so ads already on the open page stop, and from then on no ad code is loaded on this device. Cookies that an ad partner already set stay until they expire or you clear them in your browser.

See the cookie policy for details.

Why we may use this data (legal basis)

  • Ads: where the law requires it, ad cookies are used only with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in Cookie settings.
  • Server logs: our legitimate interest in keeping the site secure and working, as with the basic logs any web host keeps.
  • Emails you send us: used only to reply to you.

How long data is kept

  • Server logs: only as long as our hosting provider keeps them, which is short term.
  • Emails you send us: only as long as needed to reply.
  • What is stored on your device: until you clear it. We never receive it.

Children

The site is made for teachers, parents and event hosts, and pupils often use it in class with a teacher. Children under 13 (16 in some European countries) should use the site with a teacher or parent. There are no accounts, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your rights

We hold no names or lists: those live only on your device. For server logs or emails you sent us, write to [email protected] and we will help you see, correct or delete what we hold. You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority, for example the one in your country.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
