How the mystery box picker works
- Stock the shelves. Each line of your list becomes a wrapped gift box with a name tag.
- Start the draw. Press Open a box, tap the shelves or press the Space bar.
- Build the suspense. A wave runs along the shelves, then lids rattle on different boxes as if someone is deciding.
- The reveal. The winning box shakes, its lid pops off with a burst of light, and the name rises out on a card.
Why use mystery boxes?
Everyone loves opening a present. The boxes turn a plain random pick into a small unwrapping moment, which makes them ideal whenever the result is good news: a prize, a reward, a birthday treat or the job everyone wanted. Because each box carries a name tag, the whole room can see that everyone was on the shelf.
Ideas for the mystery boxes
- Classroom rewards: put reward ideas in the boxes, such as extra break time or choosing the class song, and let the star of the week open one.
- Party prizes: list the small prizes on the table and open a box for each winner of a party game.
- Secret task: fill the boxes with friendly challenges and open one at the start of a team meeting.
- Birthday surprise: list the guests and open boxes to decide who cuts the cake, who blows the first candle and who picks the next song.
- Three winners: set Winners to 3 and the boxes open in order: first, second and third.
The boxes use the same list as every other game. Switch to the claw machine or the duck race for a different kind of suspense.
Questions people ask
How does the mystery box picker choose a winner?
Your browser's secure random generator chooses the winner the moment you press the button, with every box getting the same chance. The boxes then wiggle and rattle, and the winner's box is the one whose lid pops off. The rattling is suspense, not a second draw.
Can I choose which box to open?
No, and that is on purpose. If you could pick a box, the result would depend on your choice rather than on a fair draw. Tapping the game starts the draw, and the box that opens is always the one the fair draw chose.
How many boxes fit on the shelves?
Up to 48, each with its own name tag. With many boxes the tags get small on a phone, so for very long lists try the hat or the slot machine, which handle any number of names.
Can I open several boxes, one after another?
Yes. Set Winners in Settings and the boxes open one by one in winning order, each name rising out on its own card; then the cards gather into a list of all the winners.
Is it a good way to give out prizes?
It is one of the nicest reveals for prizes, birthdays and classroom rewards. Put the prizes in the list instead of names, such as our prize ideas, and let the box reveal what someone has won. We don't sell or send prizes; the boxes are only for picking.
