      Ways to use this list

      • Map labelling for Year 6: spin a country, find it on a blank map of Africa and write in its name and capital.
      • Country fact files: each pair gets a different country with No repeats until everyone is picked and finds its flag, languages and one famous place.
      • Cooking club: spin a country and try a dish it is known for, such as jollof rice in Nigeria or injera in Ethiopia.
      • Neighbour game: spin a country, then everyone names as many countries as they can that share a border with it.

Press Spin the wheel, tap the game or press the Space bar. Change the list in the box as you like: add your own, delete what doesn't suit you, or write *2 after an entry to give it double the chance. The game buttons switch the same list to a duck race, hat, claw machine and more.

      Questions people ask

How many countries are in Africa?

Africa has 54 countries that belong to the United Nations, and all 54 are on the wheel. The African Union has 55 members because it also includes the Sahrawi Republic, which claims Western Sahara, a territory whose status is disputed; it is not a UN member, so it is not listed here.

Which is the largest country in Africa?

Algeria is the largest by area, ahead of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan. Nigeria has the most people, and Seychelles is the smallest African country by both area and population.

How are the African regions decided?

The quick buttons follow the United Nations grouping of African regions, which places a few countries where you might not expect: Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique count as East Africa, and Sudan counts as North Africa.

Has any African capital moved recently?

Two have. In January 2026 Equatorial Guinea made Ciudad de la Paz, on the mainland, its capital instead of Malabo on Bioko Island, and in 2019 Burundi moved its political capital from Bujumbura to Gitega. The list below shows the new capitals.
