How to play musical chairs online

      1. Add the players. Type or paste up to 20 names, one per line. Each name becomes a character standing round the seats.
      2. Choose a level. Press ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ on the game to switch between classroom chairs, beach towels, lily pads, space pods and a cushion fort.
      3. Start the music. Press Start the music, tap the game or press the Space bar. Everyone walks round the ring while the tune plays.
      4. Watch the rounds. The music stops, everyone dashes for a seat and whoever is left standing walks to the out bench. Seats are taken away and the music starts again, until one player is left in the last seat.

      Why play musical chairs online?

Musical chairs is one of the first party games most of us learn, and the moment the music stops is pure suspense. Played for real, it needs space, a pile of chairs and someone to settle the arguments, and the quickest player usually wins. Here the scramble is only a show: the winner is chosen fairly before the music starts, so every name has the same chance, nobody gets bumped, and a whole game takes seconds rather than half an hour. It works for a class, a party, a club or a video call, and the five levels keep it fresh when you play again.

      Ideas for musical chairs

      • Who goes first: the last one sitting reads first, presents first or chooses the next song.
      • Classroom jobs: play a game each morning to choose the line leader or the helper, with No repeats until everyone is picked switched on so everyone gets a turn.
      • Party games: decide who opens the next present, who picks the next game or who hides first.
      • Video-call icebreakers: share your screen and let the winner answer the next question. There are ready-made question lists among our lists.
      • Small prize draws: set Winners to 3 and the final rounds decide 3rd, 2nd and 1st place one by one.

Like every game here, musical chairs uses the same list as the duck race and names in a hat, and works with tournaments, best of 3 and team battles under the big button. All the games are together on the home page.

      Questions people ask

How does musical chairs online work?

Every name in your list becomes a cheerful character standing round a ring of seats, with one seat fewer than players. Press Start the music and they walk round while a little tune plays. When the music stops, everyone dashes for a seat and whoever is left standing walks to the out bench. Seats are taken away and the music starts again, until one character is left in the last seat: the winner. With a big group, the early rounds send several players out at once, so a game never drags on.

Is it fair? Who decides who is out?

Your browser's secure random generator chooses the winner the moment you press the button, before a single note plays. The music, the walking and the scramble for seats only act out that result: everyone else goes out first, in a random order, and the seats are placed so the right players are left standing. Nobody can be quicker or luckier on the day. How it works explains the picking in full.

      Does it play real music?

It plays a short, bouncy tune written for this page, made note by note by your browser, so there is no recording and no copyrighted song. You only hear it with the sound on: use the ๐Ÿ”Š button on the game or press M. With the sound off, little music notes still float up from the music box, so everyone can see the moment it stops. The music runs for a slightly different time in each round, so nobody can count the beats. It is made for picking names on screen rather than for timing a game with real chairs, as each round lasts only a few seconds.

      What are the five levels?

Classroom chairs (school chairs in a classroom), Beach towels (striped towels on the sand by the sea, with sun hats and sunglasses), Lily pads (frogs swimming round a pond), Space pods (astronauts floating round glowing pods) and Cushion fort (floor cushions in a living room, with nightcaps and a sofa for those who are out). Press the ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Level button on the game to go to the next one, or choose a level under Settings.

Can I play it with a class or on a video call?

Yes, and it is a safe, no-bumps way to play: nobody runs, pushes or falls off a chair, and the quiet ones have exactly the same chance as the fastest. Put it on the board in fullscreen, or share your screen on a video call. It takes up to 20 names; for a bigger class, use the classroom name picker or names in a hat.

Can I pick several winners or rank everyone?

Yes. Set Winners in Settings, or tick Rank everyone. The final rounds take one seat away at a time, so the top places are decided one by one, and each winner shows their place number on the bench. With a long ranking, the early rounds send a few players out together.
