Add pictures of people, pets or things. Each photo takes its file's name (ava.jpg becomes "Ava") and appears in every game. Photos stay on this device and are not in share links.

      Ways to use this list

      • Beat your streak: give the English meaning before the wheel stops, and count how many you can answer in a row without a miss.
      • Masculine or feminine: read out a noun without its article and pupils hold up a card marked M or F before you check the list.
      • Pronunciation practice: spin until you land on a tricky sound such as la sœur, l'œil or la fenêtre, then repeat it after an audio dictionary.
      • Café role play: press Food, spin three items and order them politely using "je voudrais" and "s'il vous plaît".
      • Family trip prep: spin five words a day in the week before a holiday in France, Belgium, Switzerland or Quebec.

Press Spin the wheel, tap the game or press the Space bar. Change the list in the box as you like: add your own, delete what doesn't suit you, or write *2 after an entry to give it double the chance. The game buttons switch the same list to a duck race, hat, claw machine and more.

      Questions people ask

Why do some French words start with l' instead of le or la?

Le and la shorten to l' before a vowel sound or a silent h, so it is l'école, not la école. That hides the gender, which is why the full list marks those words (m) or (f).

What do the accents on French words do?

They change the sound or tell two words apart. É (école) sounds close to "ay", è and ê (mère, fenêtre) sound like the "e" in "bed", and ç (garçon) sounds like an "s". French teachers count a missing accent as a spelling mistake.

Why is hair plural in French?

French talks about your hair as many hairs: les cheveux. Un cheveu means one single hair. So "I have brown hair" becomes "j'ai les cheveux bruns".

Is there a Spanish or German version of this list?

Yes: the Spanish word generator and the German word generator use the same kind of beginner list, so you can compare how three languages name the same things.
