Add pictures of people, pets or things. Each photo takes its file's name (ava.jpg becomes "Ava") and appears in every game. Photos stay on this device and are not in share links.

      Ways to use this list

      • New puppy: spin a few names and call each one across the garden. The name your puppy turns towards most often is usually the keeper.
      • Rescue litters: shelter volunteers can name every puppy at once by setting Winners to the size of the litter and spinning one time.
      • Settling a family argument: each person adds their favourite to the list and the wheel decides, so nobody can blame a brother or sister.
      • Writers: a dog tells readers about its owner. A farmer's Kodiak is a very different animal from a city flat's Bijou.
      • Second dog joining the family: spin until the new name starts with a different sound from the first dog's, so Rosie and Gus each know who is being called.

Press Spin the wheel, tap the game or press the Space bar. Change the list in the box as you like: add your own, delete what doesn't suit you, or write *2 after an entry to give it double the chance. The game buttons switch the same list to a duck race, hat, claw machine and more.

      Questions people ask

What are the most popular dog names?

Names like Luna, Bella, Max, Charlie and Cooper often appear near the top of yearly dog-name lists in the US and the UK. Luna is on our general pet name page, so this list leaves it out.

What makes a dog name easy to learn?

One or two syllables with a clear, sharp sound, like Gus or Penny, cut through background noise. Trainers also suggest avoiding names that sound like commands: Kit sounds like "sit", Bo like "no".

Can I spin only boy or only girl dog names?

Yes: press Boy dogs or Girl dogs above the picker. The funny, big-dog and small-dog sets work for any dog.

Can this help me choose a breed as well?

Still choosing a breed? Spin the dog breed generator for ideas, then come back once you know whether you are naming a Great Dane or a Chihuahua.

      Can I change a rescue dog's name?

Yes. Dogs learn a new name quickly when it always means something good: say it in a happy voice, reward the moment they look at you, and practise a few times a day. Many adopters choose a name that sounds like the old one, so Bonnie might become Winnie.
