Questions people ask
What are the most common yoga poses?
Poses you meet in almost every beginner class include mountain, downward-facing dog, child's pose, cobra, cat and cow, warrior I and II, triangle, tree, bridge and corpse pose. Press Beginners for a list built around them.
Why do yoga poses have Sanskrit names?
Yoga began in ancient India, and the traditional names are in Sanskrit, an old Indian language. Most end in "asana", meaning seat or posture: tadasana is mountain pose and vrksasana is tree pose.
Which yoga poses have the funniest names?
Happy baby, which looks just like it sounds, is a favourite, along with garland, lizard, puppy, cow face and legs up the wall. Children love the animal poses; press Kids (animal poses) for those.
How long should I hold a yoga pose?
Beginners often hold a pose for 3 to 5 slow breaths, and restful poses such as child's pose for a minute or more. Move gently, never force a stretch, and come out of any pose that hurts.
