      Ways to use this list

      • Listening club: spin a genre each week and everyone brings one track from it, then says what they noticed about the instruments, the beat and the mood.
      • Music lesson rhythm game: spin a genre and have the class clap its feel, such as the off-beat chop of reggae guitar or the swung rhythm of jazz.
      • Band practice: play a song you know in the genre the wheel picks. Turning a pop song into bossa nova or punk is a great arrangement exercise.
      • Songwriting stretch: write a 30-second song in a genre you never listen to. The habits of an unfamiliar style often break your own ruts.
      • Long car journeys: each passenger spins a genre and chooses the next song from it, so everyone hears something new.

Press Spin the wheel, tap the game or press the Space bar. Change the list in the box as you like: add your own, delete what doesn't suit you, or write *2 after an entry to give it double the chance. The game buttons switch the same list to a duck race, hat, claw machine and more.

      Questions people ask

What are the main music genres?

Most lists start with about ten: pop, rock, hip hop, R&B, jazz, blues, country, classical, electronic and folk. Almost every other genre grew out of these, often by mixing two of them together.

What is the difference between a genre and a subgenre?

A genre is a broad family, like rock or electronic music. A subgenre is a branch with its own sound: grunge and surf rock are kinds of rock, while house and techno are kinds of electronic music.

How do I find songs in a genre I do not know?

Search the genre name with words like "essential tracks" in your music player, or ask a librarian for a compilation. Give it three songs before you decide, because a new style often takes a few listens to click.

Can I spin two genres for a mash-up?

Yes. Set Winners to 2 in Settings and blend the results: folk with electronic beats, or jazz chords over a hip hop groove. Plenty of today's genres began as exactly this kind of mix.
